Running is My Snickers

Today I put on running clothes, then crawled onto the bed and curled into a ball. I just couldn't find the motivation to go. After a big race, I almost develop a weird fear that I've literally run out of my mojo and can't run anymore. That I'll get out there and totally fail.

Matt prodded me until I was halfway off the bed, and goaded me until my shoes were on and I had shuffled to the door. Why? As he put it: "You turn into a grumpy honey when you don't run for too long."

By mile 1.5, I felt the shift take place. The shackles fell off. I bloomed inside. I remembered why I run. I fell into the run like it was the most natural thing in the world, and before I knew it I'd gotten in four miles before it was time for dinner.
Not bad at all!
On the run, I also realized my greatest fear (more on that later I think) and that I miss my Ragnar girls! Good thing I'll be seeing Kristin this week and next, but I'm going to have to set something up so I can see them. Because seriously, I'm having withdrawals.

Anyway, you know those Snickers commercials? "You're not yourself when you're hungry?" Oh my gosh, guys, running is totally my Snickers. I'm such a moody diva without it.


So yeah, back on the horse and onto running! It's the end of long-race season for me (almost), so that means running for fun, some speed-work, and short races! Hooray!

  2. My quiet time!! With the twins chatter, loud playing and constant neediness all.day.long. I can find solace on my runs! The longer, the better. So glad you made it out for yours and found a happy place!

  3. Right now, running is my challenge! I am currently in prehab mode, and since I've been sick the past few weeks I haven't been able to take off with my regular running. Running continues to challenge me, and I long for the days when I was training for half marathons!

  5. Yay for shaking off the shackles and having a great run! And also for us being on the exact same schedule :) Time for some 5Ks before we get ready for marathon training!! :)

  6. Running is my therapy. It's my time when everything turns off and I forget about things for awhile. I know what you mean about feeling the shift. I turn into such a moody lady when I don't exercise!

    1. Isn't it crazy how visceral the feeling was...I could literally feel something change mid-run! I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets moody if I take too much time off!

  7. I absolutely love when you don't want to run and then just do it and all of a sudden it is this magical thing!! That happened to me a couple of times last year and it was the best feeling in the world!
    Don't be too hard on yourself love! You ran Ragnar and a half marathon in a week's span (or so)! Your body probably needs some rest!!! Just recall those memories when you get into a funk about running because I'm sure they will inspire you to get out the door!!

    1. Yes, there's very little that can beat a reluctant-run-turned-awesome!!

      I know I need the rest, but it's such a weird fight between my brain and body!

  8. "Run like a G" is absolutely right. After those efforts, the first focus should be on resting and having fun workouts (whatever they may be). For at least two weeks! Until running more feels like the thing you want to do most in the world.

    That's the good news about getting consistent with your running - that feeling that you've lost your running mojo starts to dissipate, or at least is more easily combated with the knowledge of your experience.

    1. I know! My problem is that sometimes I take time off completely instead of just running easily for a few weeks. Next time I'll be better about that!

  10. Don't you love when you talk yourself into a run that you aren't really feeling and then hit that sweet spot which reminds you why you love running?!
    Running is my sunshine!!! (necessary especially in the winter)

    1. Okay, this is even cuter...He thought his going might motivate me, but he wasn't up for a run, so he offered to sit in the car while I ran. Seriously, best hubby ever IMHO ;o)

  12. I always call Matt (my husband, lol) when I feel that way and tell him to 'say something to motivate me.' It works EVERY time!

  13. Running is my hope! I run to recharge and I hope it will keep me active and fit as I slide down the (aging) hill toward a number with a 5 in front of it. Running is fulfilling - nothing else I do comes close to feeling like a good run :)

    1. It's so true that running is irreplaceable. I did other workouts last week, but none of them made me feel the way a run does!!

  14. I can't wait until I get to the "OMG I LOVE RUNNING!" place. I love the feeling of accomplishment and the way I feel after, but I've only had a couple runs when I feel true enjoyment as I'm running. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Lol!

    1. I always find this kind of thing interesting...if you don't enjoy it while you do it, why do you keep doing it? (I'm honestly curious...there are SO many different kinds of exercises to choose from!)

      I think loving it even while it was hard is what kept me going; otherwise I would've given up long ago!
